This week is all about VALUABLES and what we place VALUE on in our lives.

You may remember seeing footage and images of the RIOTS that took place across the UK in the summer of 2011. Some of the most shocking images were of people mindlessly stealing valuables from shops. It seemed the line between RIGHT and WRONG didn't really exist. Watching the burning buildings and looting on the television, it was like watching a movie where society had broken down and lawlessness ruled.

Was the temptation just too much for people or do we need to ask - ARE WE GETTING VALUABLES AND VALUES MIXED UP?

Matthew chapter 16 verses 24 to 27

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If ANYONE would COME AFTER ME, he must DENY HIMSELF and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to SAVE his life will LOSE it, but whoever LOSES HIS LIFE FOR ME WILL FIND IT. WHAT GOOD IS IT FOR A MAN IF HE GAINS THE WHOLE WORLD, YET FORFEITS HIS SOUL?

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has DONE."

Jesus talks about VALUES and VALUABLES in this verse. He says, what good is it if a man GAINS THE WHOLE WORLD and yet LOSES HIS SOUL?

WHAT DOES GAINING THE WHOLE WORLD MEAN?

  • Maybe it's about gaining possessions - having all the latest gismos and gadgets.

  • Maybe it's about gaining money - having the ability to buy anything you wanted

  • Maybe it's about gaining power - having the power to control people

  • Maybe it's about gaining fame - having people know who you are

Jesus says there is no point GAINING all of this if you LOSE your soul (or self) in the process!

WHAT DOES 'LOSES HIS SOUL' MEAN?

  • Maybe he loses love - his family and friends may come second to the possessions he owns

  • Maybe he loses compassion - for those in need because he is too busy thinking about himself

  • Maybe he loses his skills/talents/passions - because they have been neglected.

  • Maybe he loses his values -forgets what is really important

  • Maybe he loses himself - who is he behind the wealth?

Watch the video clip and think about what these people rioting are gaining, and also what they may be losing.

Jesus is trying to tell us not to get valuables and values mixed up! Our soul is who we are, our essence and it is this that is valuable to God, not what we own. He wants to see what we do in our lives not how much is in our bank or what trainers we are wearing!

Albert Einstein said this:

"Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."

What do you think this means?

Jesus placed VALUE on things that couldn't be counted, things like LOVING YOUR NEIGHBOUR, RESPECTING YOUR PARENTS and BEING HONEST. It's these things that COUNT and make a positive impact in our lives.

  • As a young person can you understand what may have caused these people to do what they did?

  • Do you ever feel stereotyped as a young person?

  • Do you think there are bigger issues behind these riots?

  • Were any of you affected by what happened?

  • What emotions do you have about it?

  • How has your community reacted?

  • Do you think that despite GAINING possessions these looters LOST something else?

  • What should change to try to stop this from happening again in the future?

Open my eyes that I may see the need of others;

Open my ears that I may hear their cries;

Open my heart so that they need not be without help

Let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong,

Or afraid to defend the poor because of the anger of the rich.

Show me where love and hope and faith are needed,

And use me to bring them to these places.

Open my eyes and ears that I may, this coming day,

Be able to do some work of peace for thee.

Amen.
